As the gaming industry grew in popularity, mysterious urban legends surrounding video games and gamer culture emerged. These urban legends began to proliferate as the Internet became more widely used. Gamers themselves made some seemingly innocent games quite sinister. We’ve compiled 5 of the most mysterious urban legends that made players wake up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night.
Fallout 3 predicted the death of Gary Coleman
Bethesda called this Fallout 3 urban legend a hoax, but that didn’t stop people from believing it. The legend states that if the player kills Tridognite and then destroys Raven Rock without completing the Galaxy News Radio mission, the GNR station will begin broadcasting strange messages. In these messages, Tridognight reads out several numbers until he is interrupted by Morse code.
Players have deciphered the numbers and Morse code and found a prediction of actor Gary Coleman’s death. One of the other predictions allegedly made by GNR is that Britney Spears will have to win an Oscar in 2023.
Rethman in Grand Theft Auto 4
The Grand Theft Auto franchise has been the subject of numerous urban legends and myths, perhaps more than any other video game series. Those who believe in the Retman claim that the creature lives in the Liberty City subway and cite the strange puddles of orange blood that appear in the subway system as proof, a news in-game report about a rat infestation in the city. The existence of this character is still controversial, but Rockstar Games denies this theory.
Hell Valley in Super Mario Galaxy 2
In Super Mario Galaxy 2 players noticed strange creatures looking at Mario from the top of the mountain in the “Hell Valley” area. The fans of Mario, having dug in the game files, determined that these creatures are called “Hell Valley Sky Trees” (Hell Valley Sky Trees). However, these creatures are not like trees and still leave players wondering what they are, what they want, and why they won’t stop looking at Mario.
Herobrine in Minecraft
Herobrine is a Minecraft character who is said to appear in the game world at random places and do strange things, create random objects, cut leaves off trees and attack players. He is also often referred to as the dead miner or the miner’s ghost.
Music from Pokémon that makes children kill themselves
Legend has it that after the release of Pokemon Red and Green (or Blue, as it was called in the West), there was an increase in child suicides in Japan. Apparently, children were killing themselves because of the music in Lavender Town, an area haunted by Pokemon ghosts. There is even a pokemon cemetery in the area. Some versions of the legend go so far as to claim that Game Freak developers purposely encoded the music to emit frequencies that would cause children to take their own lives.
